What to Expect When You Participate

Step 1: Initial visit: Medical Screening & Personalized Tracking

Your journey begins with a comprehensive neurological assessment, where a specialist will review your medical history, conduct a neurological exam, and assess your balance. To help us understand your symptoms over time, you'll also receive a personalized diary to track your experiences until your next visit.

Step 2: Second Study Visit

This study follows an open-label design for vestibular migraine participants. You will receive an infusion of either nitroglycerin, a process carefully monitored by our team. During this session, we will assess your attention, balance, and eye movements. For healthy participants we will follow a double-blind design, meaning neither you nor the investigator will know whether you are receiving nitroglycerin or a saline infusion.

Step 3: (Healthy Participants only) Third Study Visit, 1–2 Weeks Later

Your final visit will be similar to the previous one, but this time, you will receive the opposite infusion. This allows us to directly compare responses, giving us valuable insights into vestibular migraine mechanisms.

Compensation

You will be reimbursed for your time and travel upon study completion. Attendance at the screening visit will be reimbursed at £50, while each face-to-face infusion (triggering) visit will be reimbursed at £100, in recognition of the greater time and procedures involved. In addition, reasonable travel expenses will be covered:

  • For participants travelling within London, public transport costs (bus, Underground, or local train) will be reimbursed up to a maximum of £20 per visit.

  • For participants travelling from outside London, standard class public transport costs will be reimbursed up to £50 per visit.

  • Other travel methods (such as taxi or private car mileage at NHS rates) may be reimbursed if agreed in advance with the study team.
